DELAURO VISITS NORTH BRANFORD HIGH SCHOOL GREENHOUSE

Washington, DC— Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) visited North Branford High School today to tour the greenhouse, where students learn about how to grow vegetables and food sustainably while supplying fresh vegetables for the school's cafeteria.

Built two years ago, the North Branford High School greenhouse supports the school's horticulture and science curricula, enriching the students' education and providing healthy lunch options for all the students. The students have grown so much produce that last year over 400 pounds of vegetables were donated to the local senior center and soup kitchen. In addition to learning about how to grow the produce, students learn about the business opportunities farming presents through food production and the "Coffee Coop," the student run coffee shop for staff where students prepare coffee and food for the school staff.

Joined by Scott Schoonmaker, Superintendent of Schools, Todd Stoeffler, Principal of North Branford High School and Carter Welch, Assistant Principal of North Branford High School Congresswoman DeLauro toured the greenhouse and spoke to local students about their efforts.

"I am thrilled to see the students at North Branford High School not only growing and consuming their own produce, but learning about the economics of farming and how to pursue a career in the field. It is critically important for our young people to learn the importance of eating healthy, and the students I met with today are setting a great example for their peers—who, at this school, are able to enjoy the fruits of their labors," said Congresswoman DeLauro. "In addition, these students are learning how to take the lessons they have learned in the greenhouse and apply them to real-world business scenarios in class and at the "Coffee Coop." I applaud the students and teachers who have made this greenhouse and the educational possibilities it includes possible, and look forward to their continued good work."
