DeLauro Votes against Continuing Resolution
Makes Permanent Deeply Harmful Budget Cuts
WASHINGTON, DC—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) releasedthe following statement today after voting against the Senate's ContinuingResolution:
"I am strongly opposed to this bill, which makes permanentthe deep, indiscriminate, and harmful budget cuts known as sequestration. Thesecuts threaten our economic recovery and the health, well-being, and future ofmillions of American families.
"Both the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office andFederal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke have argued that sequestration could costus as many as 750,000 jobs. And that is not all.
"This resolution cuts 70,000 children out of HeadStart. It takes away critical job training programs from hundreds ofthousands of unemployed and dislocated workers, veterans, and students. Itforces 2500 schools and one million disadvantaged children to lose Title I aid.It cuts child care assistance for 30,000 kids. And it risks undermining accessto new health insurance marketplaces for American consumers provided for in theAffordable Care Act.
"The list goes on and on. On top of deep cuts that havealready become law, this resolution slices even deeper into every responsibilityof good government –public health, safety, transportation, you nameit. It also includes four egregious provisions related to firearmsthat would permanently blindfold law enforcement and hamper our ability tocombat gun violence.
"This is not what the American people want from us. Weshould have passed a bill that creates jobs, grows the economy, and protectsthe middle-class, seniors, and most vulnerable. The legislation we passedtoday does none of these things. Instead, it needlessly puts American familiesat risk."
