DeLauro Votes to Enshrine Equal Rights for Women in the U.S. Constitution

February 13, 2020

WASHINGTON, DC (Febrary 13, 2020) Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement after voting for a resolution to facilitate the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to the United States Constitution. Last month, Virginia became the 38th state to ratify the ERA—the required support to ratify the amendment—but the arbitrary ratification deadline has passed.

"For nearly 50 years, our country has strived to make equal rights for women a foundational value in the United States Constitution through the Equal Rights Amendment. Women deserve to nothing less than equal treatment—whether it be equal pay for equal work or freedom from discrimination—and the Equal Rights Amendment will help fill those gaps. Following Virginia's ratification last month, we now have enough states for that to become the law of the land. Today's vote will help clear the path for this much-needed change. I urge the Senate to take up this important resolution so that every woman and girl can have equal justice under the law."
