DeLauro Votes to Improve Flood Insurance Program

July 15, 2010
Legislation will protect millions of home and business owners against flood damage

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) released the following statement in support of the Flood Insurance Reform Priorities Act, which will help American families to protect their homes and businesses from flooding damage.

This bill updates the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which was established over 40 years ago and protects more than five million homes and businesses, by expanding coverage and giving consumers more control over their insurance. It will give families more flexibility and options, create a Flood Insurance Advocate to assist policyholders, and ensure the long-term viability of the program.

"In the wake of the devastating floods in Connecticut earlier this year, reforming and expanding the National Flood Insurance Program is critical to local families and businesses," said Congresswoman DeLauro. "Rather than continuing with unpredictable short-term extensions of current law, we must enact these reforms so that the program can flourish and provide better, more comprehensive and more affordable protection over the long-term to the millions of families who depend on it."
