DeLauro Votes to Pass $1.5 Trillion Investment in U.S. Infrastructure

July 1, 2020

H.R. 2, the Moving Forward Act, includes sweeping investments in not only our roads, bridges, and transit systems, but also our schools, housing, broadband access, and more

Legislation would modernize Connecticut: $3.6 billion+ for highways, $1.3 billion+ for transit

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03), Chair of the House Appropriations Committee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, took bold action to support of H.R. 2, the Moving Forward Act. This critical $1.5 trillion investment in United States' infrastructure includes more than $4.94 billion for Connecticut over five years, $3.6 billion for highway infrastructure and $1.3 billion for transit infrastructure.

"According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, we need to invest $4.69 trillion in our nation's infrastructure by 2025 to bring our national infrastructure up to a state of good repair," said Congresswoman DeLauro. "We need a robust investment to exceed that amount in order to not only fix our current infrastructure state but to invest in new projects to bring our infrastructure system into the 21st century. In the process, the Moving Forward Act puts millions of Americans to work while improving the functioning and safety of the United States economy."

H.R. 2 takes bold steps to strengthen our economy and create real opportunities for millions with good-paying jobs that cannot be outsourced. The Moving Forward Act would:

  • Reauthorize the Long Island Sound Program;
  • Deliver better roads and bridges faster with more than $300 billion of investment that prioritizes fixing what we already have, including tens of thousands of structurally deficient bridges;
  • Invest more than $100 billion in transit;
  • Triple funding for Amtrak to $29 billion, allowing for upgrades and expansion of the passenger rail network, and improves rail crossing safety and addresses increasingly long trains that block crossings for more than 10 minutes, which impacts local traffic and emergency response times;
  • Invest $100 billion targeted at high-poverty schools with facilities that endanger the health and safety of students and educators; and,
  • Leverage a 5-year, $10 billion federal investment in addressing structural challenges and upgrading child care facilities to generate additional state and private investments in making sure that child care settings are safe, appropriate, and able to comply with current and future public health directives.

"The Moving Forward Act delivers far-reaching, forward-thinking progress for Connecticut families," said Congresswoman DeLauro. "It's now up to Senate Republicans and the Trump administration to join House Democrats in moving our nation forward and taking bold action to rebuild America."
