DeLauro Welcomes Afghan Refugees to Connecticut

September 17, 2021

As Chair of Appropriations, DeLauro is Leading Congress in Securing Critical Federal Resources to Continue Evacuation Efforts and Support Resettling Afghans

NEW HAVEN – House Appropriations Committee Chair Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) issued this statement welcoming as many as 310 Afghan refugees to Connecticut:

"I am proud to stand with Governor Ned Lamont in welcoming more than 300 Afghan refugees to Connecticut. Refugees and allies, fortunate enough to have already made the trip, left behind their lives, professions, and families with the hope of a better life. So many of them supported our mission abroad, and now they need our assistance to rebuild. We have a duty to work together to ensure that these men, women, and children have the resources they need to thrive.

"Connecticut has long served as an example of how communities should come together to aid refugees, and I am confident we will meet this moment with the generosity and support that make our communities great.

"I want to again extend my gratitude to Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services (IRIS), Connecticut Institute for Refugees and Immigrants (CIRI), Danbury Area Refugee Assistance (DARA), and Connecticut Immigrant and Refugee Coalition (CIRC) for providing critical services to quickly accept and integrate our new Afghan neighbors.

"As Chair of the House Appropriations Committee, the committee that will determine the federal funds for these missions, I am working closely with federal agencies to respond to their needs. I will continue fighting to ensure the federal government honors its commitments to safely evacuate those still in Afghanistan and supports our new neighbors with resettlement assistance as they work to rebuild their lives."
