WASHINGTON, D.C. – Late yesterday, President Obama signed into law $1.4 million in funding secured by U.S. Senator Chris Dodd (CT), U.S. Senator Joseph Lieberman (CT), Congressman Chris Murphy (CT-5), and Congresswoman Rosa L.DeLauro (CT-3) for brownfield assessment and remediation in Waterbury.

"Cleaning up contaminated areas in the City of Waterbury will improve the quality of life for current residents and future generations." said Dodd. "Most importantly, restoring these abandoned sections of the city will provide Waterbury with the ability to expand economic development and recovery in their community and the region."

"I am pleased that these critical funds will be going to Waterbury to clean up and redevelop contaminated brownfield sites, making these areas attractive to new businesses that will bring economic growth to the city," said Lieberman.

"With these funds Waterbury will be able to revitalize our neighborhoods, allowing them to clean up and redevelop previously abandoned properties. Through these efforts we will ensure our communities where people live and work are safer," said DeLauro.

"This is great news for Waterbury, and will go a long way in helping the city refurbish property to attract businesses and residents. On top of the $15 million I secured in the fall to clean up the Waterbury Industrial Commons, I sincerely believe Waterbury is poised to begin a new era of prosperity," said Murphy.

The Members worked with Waterbury Mayor Michael Jarjura on this request. This funding will come from the Department of Housing and Urban Development for the assessment and remediation of contaminated, abandoned, and blighted brownfields in the city.

In recent weeks, both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate passed H.R. 1105, the Omnibus Appropriations bill, sending it out of Congress and to President Obama's desk. This legislation, which includes the $1.4 million for brownfields cleanup in Waterbury, wraps up work on the Fiscal Year 2009 appropriations bills, and works in harmony with the economic recovery package, making investments that address the country's immediate needs while investing in our long term economic strength.
