DeLauro UrgesCongress to Take Up Legislation after Election

NEWHAVEN, CT—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) released the following statementtoday upon news public health officials found multiple health and safetyviolations at the compounding center responsible for sickening over 300 peoplewith meningitis and killing 23. The State of Massachusetts has moved torevoke the licenses of the center and associated pharmacists.

"Asif the deaths of 24 people and illnesses of over 300 more were not enough, thelack of safety procedures to ensure sterility of the drugs being shipped, isjust more evidence of the need for congressional action. I plan tointroduce legislation when Congress returns after the election that willstrengthen the FDA's role in monitoring and licensing compoundingpharmacies. The current patchwork of regulations has clearly failed us.

"TheFDA has updated its list of facilities that received potentially contaminateddrugs from the New England Compounding Center. I urge everyone who mayhave been exposed to immediately contact their doctor."
