Marking International Women's Day, DeLauro Applauds Biden Administration for Advancing Gender Equity
WASHINGTON – House Appropriations Committee Chair Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) issued the following statement applauding President Biden’s executive actions to establish the White House Gender Policy Council and direct the Department of Education to review its rules on gender policy, specifically targeting the previous administration’s changes to Title IX:
“As we recognize International Women’s Day, we must shine a light on the women around the world who are disproportionately carrying the burden of the coronavirus pandemic. From risking their lives every day as frontline workers to pausing their careers to care for their families, women have been forced to make remarkable sacrifices. A staggering 2.5 million women left the workforce in 2020 compared to 1.8 million men, a decline that will take generations to overcome if not met with swift federal policy to help women return to the workforce.
“The Biden-Harris Administration is meeting this crisis with action. By creating a White House Gender Policy Council to advance gender equality both at home and abroad, President Biden is combatting systemic bias and discrimination and laying the groundwork to increase economic security and opportunity for women.
“Additionally, President Biden is working to reverse discriminatory actions taken by the previous administration’s Department of Education. Students should be guaranteed a safe education, protected from sexual harassment and assault. This is the first step toward reversing the outrageous policies carried out by Secretary DeVos.
“I stand ready to meet these executive actions with legislation. On International Women’s Day, and every day, we must honor women with decisive action to advance gender equity.”
