Rosa DeLauro Statement on Proposed Food Safety Rules Announced Today
Come On Second Anniversary of Food SafetyModernization Act
WASHINGTON,DC—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro released the following statement today on twoproposed food safety rules released by the Food and Drug Administration(FDA). The rules were required by the FDA Food Safety Modernization Actof 2010, which was signed into law two years ago today.
"Iam encouraged that the produce safety and preventive controls rules havefinally been issued. No one should have to worry that their food willmake them or their loved ones sick. I look forward to engaging with theFDA to make sure that both of these rules are strong, comprehensive, andenacted as quickly as possible. And I will continue to press mycolleagues to ensure the FDA has necessary funding to ensure the safety of ourfood.
"Despitetoday's step forward, I am disappointed that only two of the long overdue ruleshave been released and will continue to advocate for robust, timelyimplementation of the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act. Two years is fartoo long to wait for just two rules to be proposed. Nothing less than thelives and health of Americans is at stake; we must do better."
DeLauro is a seniormember of the subcommittee responsible for funding the FDA and a longtimechampion for food safety. She was one of the leaders responsible forpassing the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act and continues to advocate forstrong food safety rules.
