Congresswoman DeLauro Statement on Passing of Gloria Steinem
Today, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) released the following statement following the passing of feminist icon and activist, Gloria Steinem:
“I am heartbroken to hear of the passing of Gloria Steinem. An author, advocate, and leader, she brought women’s issues to the forefront of national discussion, sparking debate on issues that had been ignored for far too long and opening doors for women around the world – making it possible for women to work in any field and live their lives in a way that was most fulfilling to them. Her leadership and vision helped create an atmosphere in which women became empowered and able to share their voices. She was a pioneer for women’s liberation and fought to ensure women truly had equal rights and opportunities.
Gloria Steinem was a woman of vision. I was inspired by her time in Connecticut and feel so fortunate that I was able to work with her early in my career – she gave me critical support during my first run for Congress in the legendary Year of the Woman. Her legacy will continue to inspire, and her long-lasting impact will continue to be felt for generations to come. My thoughts are with her family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
