DeLauro Announces New AmeriCorps VISTA Project for Greater New Haven
NEW HAVEN, CT (May 1, 2018) — Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement after announcing a new AmeriCorps project that will support low-income residents of Greater New Haven. The project, sponsored by the United Way of Greater New Haven, will engage 12 AmeriCorps VISTA members over the next three years to improve access to housing services, financial literacy opportunities, and healthy, affordable food for the region's low-income residents.
"Our government plays a critical role in helping the most vulnerable people in our communities. That is why, as the Senior Democrat on the Appropriations subcommittee that funds AmeriCorps programs, I was proud to fight for and win increased funding for programs like this one," said DeLauro. "Everyone deserves to know where their next meal is coming from, to live in a safe home, and to be able to acquire the tools necessary to live a better life financially. This program carries out our nation's values, and I am grateful to be a part of this project, along with the magnificent AmeriCorps and Senior Corp leaders and volunteers who are making a difference every single day."

The AmeriCorps VISTA members will create new emergency food systems designed to reduce childhood hunger by partnering with Hamden Public Schools, and increase housing opportunities for homeless individuals and families by utilizing proven landlord engagement practices. The AmeriCorps VISTA members will also coordinate financial literacy service providers, a need identified by the City of New Haven Financial Empowerment Commission.
