DeLauro Applauds Connecticut Plans to Ensure All Students Have Access to Excellent Teachers

September 11, 2015

WASHINGTON, DC—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) today applauded the U.S. Department of Education’s announcement that they have approved Connecticut’s plan to ensure all students have access to excellent teachers. DeLauro is the senior Democrat on the subcommittee responsible for funding the Department of Education.

“A good teacher can help a student develop skills that will last them a lifetime and improve not just that child’s life, but the lives of everyone they touch. Growing up in New Haven, my teachers were a crucial part of my education, both inside and outside of the classroom. Every child needs to have this opportunity, regardless of their race, ethnicity, zip code, wealth, disability or first language. We need to continue to invest in our schools and give teachers the necessary tools to provide a quality education for our children.”

The 2015 Connecticut Equity Plan will focus its efforts on eight cities and towns, including New Haven, Waterbury and West Haven. Connecticut’s plan includes strategies to strengthen teacher preparation programs, and increase the number of Black and Latino students who pursue teaching careers.

Connecticut was one of 16 states to have their plan approved. The others were: Arkansas, Delaware, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maine, Missouri, Minnesota, New York, Nevada, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Wisconsin.
