DeLauro Applauds Governor Malloy Legislation Banning Pay Secrecy
WASHINGTON, DC—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) released the following statement today applauding Governor Malloy’s announcement he is proposing legislation banning pay secrecy.
“I applaud the Governor for putting Connecticut at the forefront of the fight for equal pay for equal work. Ending the practice of pay secrecy is an important step towards ensuring that men and women are on an equal financial playing field. Women make up half the workforce and are primary or co-breadwinners for two-thirds of families. The issue is critical not just to earnings during a woman’s career, but impacts their retirement security as well.
“Six years after the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was signed into law and more than 50 years after the signing of the Equal Pay Act, we need to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act to finish the job. I am proud that Connecticut is once again taking the lead and I urge the General Assembly to act on this issue without delay.”
DeLauro is the author of the Paycheck Fairness Act, which she has introduced in every congress since 1997. Among other provisions, it puts an end to pay secrecy. President Obama has banned retaliation among federal contractors who discuss their pay, a step DeLauro urged him to take.
