DeLauro Applauds Historic Increase in Food Stamp Benefits
Increase to Result in Additional Estimated $181 Million for Connecticut Recipients
NEW HAVEN – House Appropriations Committee Chair Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) issued the following statement on the Biden-Harris Administration's actions to increase food assistance benefits through the largest increase in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) history:
"As the cost of living in Connecticut and in communities across the country continues to skyrocket, I applaud the Biden-Harris administration for taking this step to ensure families have access to affordable, healthy, and nutritious food. By strengthening this lifeline, the updated benefit better reflects the struggles our families face today rather than outdated metrics designed decades ago.
"Under the current Thrifty Food Plan, Connecticut is receiving approximately $666 million in SNAP benefits. Under the new plan, Connecticut will receive $846 million, an increase of $181 million. As a result, SNAP-participating households will receive a historic 21 percent increase in food assistance benefits.
"With the expanded and improved Child Tax Credit I am fighting to make permanent, this increase will change lives, make day-to-day purchases more affordable, and ensure children, families, and individuals across Connecticut no longer have to go to sleep hungry."
