New education program will improve local schools, help students attend college

Washington, DC— Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) released the following statement today praising the New Haven Promise program, which will support New Haven schools and provide educational opportunities to local students.

Funded by Yale University and the City of New Haven, the New Haven Promise program is the first of its kind in Connecticut, and one of only a few across the country, and pay for New Haven public school students' tuition at any public college or university in Connecticut. The program will also cover up to $2,500 a year in tuition to those who attend a private college in the state. Students will need to have a 3.0 grade point average and a 90 percent attendance rate to qualify.

"With the costs of school skyrocketing, it is critical that we ensure our students have every opportunity to pursue a higher education. Congress addressed this through expanding the Pell grants earlier this year, but more must be done, and I commend Yale University and the City of New Haven for their actions. The importance of a good education was impressed upon me by my parents, and it has long been a priority of mine," said Congresswoman DeLauro. "The New Haven Promise program will make New Haven's students' dreams of a higher education a reality, and I look forward to seeing the generations of local students benefit from this."
