DeLauro Applauds Passage of Universal Background Check Bill

February 27, 2019

WASHINGTON, DC (February 27, 2019) — Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement after voting in favor of the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 (H.R. 8), which passed the House of Representatives.

"Today is a historic day in the House of Representatives. Not that long ago, we sat in the well of the House to demand a vote on gun violence prevention legislation. We had that vote today, and the Congress said yes to universal background checks. I thank the grassroots organizations who helped get us here. It has been eight long years, but we are finally addressing the continuing epidemic of gun violence that has plagued communities across the country like Newtown, Las Vegas, Aurora, Charleston, and the list goes on. I urge my Senate colleagues to pass this bill, and I am committed to continuing this effort for even stronger measures—like banning assault weapons, banning high capacity magazines, and funding gun violence research at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."
