DeLauro Commends FDA Proposal to Include Percent Daily Value for Added Sugar on Nutrition Facts Label

July 24, 2015

NEW HAVEN, CT—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) released the following statement today commending the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for proposing to include the percent daily value for added sugars on the Nutrition Facts label found on packaged foods. DeLauro urged the FDA to take this step nearly a year ago. That letter can be found here.

“Specifying a Daily Value for added sugar will move us further forward in assisting customers in making healthier choices. Providing needed context for an acceptable intake of added sugars will make it clear to consumers that added sugars should be limited. This will, in turn, help us combat the alarming obesity and diabetes epidemics that our country faces. I commend FDA for today’s proposal and urge them to move expeditiously on finalizing this proposal.”

DeLauro is the former chairwoman of the subcommittee responsible for funding the FDA.
