DeLauro Condemns DeVos’s New Campus Sexual Misconduct Rules

November 16, 2018

WASHINGTON, DC (November 16, 2018) Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding U.S. Department of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos's newly proposed campus sexual assault rules.

"In the ongoing battle to eradicate sexual assault from college campuses, Secretary Betsy DeVos is on the side of those accused rather than the victims. I do not say that lightly—there is no other way to interpret these newly proposed rules, which remove policies that hold perpetrators accountable and help ensure schools are maintaining a safe environment for their students. Unfortunately, these new rules follow DeVos's pattern of rolling back Title IX protections the previous administration's created to address sexual assault by investigating matters in a prompt, impartial, and equitable manner. Survivors of sexual assault deserve better—starting with the same protections as accused students in sexual assault proceedings and to live and learn in a community free of sexual violence. Betsy DeVos is failing them in this regard, and if she does not get this right in the final rule, Congress needs to step up to return the proper balance."
