Delauro Congratulates New Haven Police Department On National Recognition As Community Policing Model
NEW HAVEN, CT—In reaction to today’s Wall Street Journal Article, “Putting Police Officers Back on the Beat,” which featured the New Haven Police Department as a national example for community policing, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro issued the following statement:
“In the midst of all that is happening in communities across the country, I could not be more proud that the New Haven Police Department and our community are being looked to as a national model for community policing. Here in New Haven we have seen firsthand the positive impacts of this public safety strategy. Community policing, when done right, builds a unique level of trust between the Police Department and residents - - a familiarity that strengthens community bonds. And while it does not solve every problem, it can and does make all the difference.
“Community policing has a long tradition in the City of New Haven and I am proud I was there for its inception. When Chief Esserman brought the concept back to the Department in 1991, I was proud to support his efforts and work with him and the Yale Child Study Center to bring community policing to the next level.
“I want to congratulate Chief Esserman and all of the men and women of the New Haven Police Department on this national recognition and thank them for their continued commitment to serve and protect our community.”
