DeLauro to Congress: Republican Health Care Bill Will Cost Lives

May 4, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC (May 4, 2017) Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today spoke on the House Floor to call on Congress to reject the Republican health care bill, which increases the costs of premiums and deductibles, imposes an age tax on older Americans, and unravels protections for patients with pre-existing conditions.

Here are the remarks, as delivered:

The Republican healthcare bill is reckless and heartless. It increases the costs of premiums and deductibles. It imposes an age tax on older Americans.

It unravels protections for patients with pre-existing conditions. It eliminates maternity care, substance abuse treatment, prescription drug coverage, and it does away with lifetime limits and annual caps.

President Trump's claim that people with pre-existing conditions will be covered—that is false and it is a betrayal. And it will have life-threatening consequences for millions of Americans. It will cost lives.

If this passes today, the American people should be in the street to call out the immorality of this legislation. They should decry this offense against humanity and this offense against the American people. And I call on the American people—do not let them get away with it.

And I yield back the balance of my time.
