DeLauro Demands Answers from Administration on Chinese Trade Policy
WASHINGTON, DC (April 17, 2017) — Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement following a tweet from President Trump doubling down in defense of his decision not to label China a currency manipulator.
“During the campaign, President Trump repeatedly made promises to take swift and immediate action to correct the course on China’s currency manipulation as soon as he arrived in office. Clearly Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn, and the rest of the Goldman Sachs wing of the White House have taken control of currency policy within the President’s first 100 days.
“Working men and women in this country who have seen their jobs shipped abroad and their wages decline, are still waiting for a substantive strategy to deal with unfair currency devaluations by our trade partners, especially China, whose currency interventions have cost millions of good paying jobs. While the Chinese are seeking to boost the yuan’s value today, the Administration must take immediate actions to address the decades of misaligned currency values and lay out a plan for ensuring that manipulation by our trading partners does not happen again. America’s middle class cannot wait.”
