DeLauro Issues Statement on Israel Demolishing UNRWA Headquarters

NEW HAVEN —Today, US Representative Rosa DeLauro issued the following statement regarding news that Israeli forces are demolishing the headquarters of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of Jerusalem: 

“I am horrified by this illegal and dangerous Israeli assault on UNRWA’s headquarters, which is a direct attack on a UN agency. Not only are Israeli forces violating the ceasefire nearly every day with deadly attacks in Gaza, but are now taking steps to eliminate one of the lifelines for Palestinians in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. Jerusalem’s Deputy Mayor even claimed that they would, quote, ‘annihilate all UNRWA personnel, while National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir referred to the demolition as ‘an important day for our sovereignty in Jerusalem’.   

“This is unacceptable language. The Netanyahu government continues to show no interest in peace or demonstrating any commitment for a better future for the Palestinian people. The international community, and the Trump Administration, must loudly condemn this act with one voice.”
