DeLauro: Republicans Just Raised the Cost of Living for Working Americans

July 3, 2025

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) released a statement after Republicans in Congress passed a budget bill that would kick families off Medicaid, raise energy costs, and cut food stamps, all to fund tax cuts for the wealthy and biggest corporations:

“Republicans just raised the cost of living for working Americans.”

“President Trump promised to lower the cost of living from day one. Instead, he and Republicans in Congress cut taxes for the ultra-wealthy while sticking working and middle-class families with the bill. President Trump’s budget bill hands $4.5 trillion in tax cuts to billionaires and the biggest corporations while gutting the very programs that help everyday Americans survive. This bill will make peoples’ daily lives more expensive for years to come.”

“This bill slashes Medicaid and Affordable Care Act coverage, ripping critical, affordable healthcare away from nearly 17 million Americans, including 186,580 people in Connecticut that rely on HUSKY or Access Health CT. It would trigger a further $500 billion cut to Medicare. It guts clean energy investments, raising electricity bills across the country. And it cuts $200 billion from proven food assistance programs like SNAP while grocery bills keep rising, taking food away from 42 million Americans.”

“Republicans have not expanded the Child Tax Credit. It is worse than current law and it is not the monthly Child Tax Credit that helped the families of 61 million children in 2021.”

“I often say: show me your budget, and I will show you your values. President Trump and Congressional Republicans’ budget reveals a simple truth: They are not fighting for everyday Americans. They are not laser-focused on the cost of living. They are fighting for the rich and powerful once again.”

“I will not stop fighting to protect vital services, to bring down the cost of living, to ensure people have quality, affordable health care, and to bring back the expanded monthly Child Tax Credit, which delivered the largest middle class tax cut in a generation. Americans deserve a budget and a Congress that works for them.”
