DeLauro Responds to President Trump’s Joint Address of Congress
Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) released the following statement in response to President Donald Trump’s address to a Joint Session of Congress:
“Tonight, President Trump painted a vision for America that serves only the wealthiest and most powerful—at the expense of the middle class, working people, children, seniors, veterans, small businesses, and family farms. His Administration, along with unchecked billionaire Elon Musk, is stealing from the American people to fund massive tax breaks and subsidies for the richest Americans and biggest corporations. Where was his plan to address the cost of living?
“We see it in their policies: gutting Medicaid, abandoning our ally Ukraine, placing blanket tariffs on our closest trading partners, and ending support for public education will make harder to achieve the American Dream. We see it in their priorities: giveaways to corporations and billionaires while everyday Americans continue to live paycheck to paycheck. They will reward the wealthiest few while leaving hardworking Americans behind.
“Today, I asked Connecticut’s 2025 Teacher of the Year Julia Miller to join me to highlight the threats to public education. I have sounded the alarm on this Administration’s plan in recent weeks as Elon Musk takes the first steps to dismantle the Department of Education by canceling $1 billion in contracts and awards supporting special education and teacher recruitment. This move will hurt families, students, and children and I am so glad Julia joined me to spotlight the real people impacted by these dangerous actions.
“The working and middle-class are the backbone of this country – they make us strong. We cannot allow President Trump to abandon them. Now more than ever, we must fight for policies that put working families first—protecting Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, making permanent the expanded, monthly Child Tax Credit, enacting paid family and medical leave, ensuring access to affordable healthcare, investing in education, and standing up to corporate greed. Americans deserve better – no family should be crushed by unbearably high costs – and I will fight every day to pass policies that help them thrive.”
