DeLauro, Roybal-Allard Statement on McCarthy’s Unfounded Call for the Resignation of Mayorkas

November 28, 2022

WASHINGTON —House Appropriations Committee Chair Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) and Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee Chair Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA-40) released the following statement on Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s call for Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to resign and threat to impeach him:

“We strongly condemn the statement today by Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy calling for the resignation of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and threatening his impeachment by House Republicans in the 118th Congress.

“Secretary Mayorkas has steadfastly led the Department through significant challenges over the last two years, including managing the flow of migrants across the southwest border while treating migrants fairly and humanely. At the same time, he has aggressively led the effort to combat cross-border smuggling operations and improve border security through the deployment of advanced technologies and support for the frontline workforce. He has also pushed hard to relieve Border Patrol Agents from migrant processing duties so they can spend more of their time doing what they were hired to do – patrol the border.

“It is unfortunate that Republican obstructionism has for decades stood in the way of opening up legal pathways for migrants to come to the United States to take jobs that U.S. employers are unable to fill. It is simply unjust for House Republicans to blame the Secretary – and by extension the DHS workforce – for problems that are being continuously perpetuated by Republican intransigence. And it is unjust for House Republicans to once again engage in political theatrics instead of working with Democrats to address the many challenges facing the American people.”
