DeLauro Slams Trump for Threatening to Upend the Health Care of 7 Million Americans
WASHINGTON, DC (April 13, 2017) — Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding President Trump’s threat to sabotage the Affordable Care Act and discontinue Cost Sharing Reduction payments, which seven million Americans rely on to afford health care.
“President Trump should be ashamed of himself. Threatening to discontinue the Cost Sharing Reduction payments that seven million Americans depend on to afford health services is beneath the dignity of his office. Doing so would make President Trump responsible for destabilizing the Affordable Care Act marketplaces. Ending these payments would increase the cost of care the most for older Americans who depend on these payments to afford co-payments and deductibles.
“Last month, President Trump and House Republicans failed to pass their plan that would raise premiums and deductibles, raid Medicare, charge older Americans more for their coverage, and kick 24 million Americans off their health care plans. If President Trump and Republicans in Congress are serious about improving access to health care, they should abandon their flawed bill and work with Democrats to improve the Affordable Care Act. Instead, the White House is negotiating behind closed doors to make their bad bill even worse. Allowing states to opt-out of protecting consumers with pre-existing conditions and providing coverage for essential health benefits like prescription drug benefits, hospitalization, or emergency services would weaken the coverage Americans currently receive and result in fewer people being covered.”
