DeLauro Statement on Biden Administration Legal Settlement on Trump Family Separations

October 17, 2023

Today, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) released a statement on the Biden administration reaching an agreement regarding the more than 4,000 children that were separated from their families by the Trump administration. The agreement would, among other things, allow families to live and work in the U.S. for three years while receiving housing, mental health, and legal assistance to apply for asylum.

“The Trump administration’s cruel separation of children from their families at the border was immoral to its core. These children were escaping violence, only to have further cruelty thrust upon them after crossing our border in search of a better life. This was child abuse. These separations were wrong and had negative psychological and physical impacts on families.

“I am proud that the Biden administration is working to right the wrong of the previous administration by ensuring that children are reunited with their parents and that they receive the support they need to recover from these cruel separations. I will work closely with the administration to ensure they have the necessary resources to reunite children with their parents and support these families as they recover from separation.”
