DeLauro Statement on the College Affordability Act

October 15, 2019

WASHINGTON, DC (October 15, 2019) Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03), Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, released the following statement upon the introduction of the College Affordability Act.

"I am delighted to see a meaningful and comprehensive proposal to revamp the Higher Education Act, the College Affordability Act. Although I am still reviewing the bill as introduced by my good friend Bobby Scott and my colleagues on the Education and Labor Committee, it is clear that this bill is an important step in the right direction."

"As the Chair of the Subcommittee that provides funding for higher education, I am proud to stand with other Members in the fight to protect students and reduce the cost of college for our nation's next generation. Through the House Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education bill for next year—which passed the House earlier this year—we have taken significant steps toward increasing Pell Grant funding to keep pace with inflation and investing significant resources in historically black colleges and universities and other minority serving institutions programs. In addition, the Subcommittee held oversight hearings on improvements to student loan servicing and on for-profit colleges, including for-profit conversions and the 90-10 loophole. I am so glad to see that the College Affordability Act takes into account this important work."
