DeLauro Statement on Coordinated Actions Supporting the Administration’s Cuba Policy

January 26, 2016

WASHINGTON, DC (January 26, 2016)Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding the coordinated actions by the Departments of Commerce and Treasury in support of the Administration's Cuba policy.

"I am pleased to see that the Administration is continuing to implement policies that normalize relations between the United States and Cuba. The changes announced today build on our efforts to directly support the Cuban people, so that they can access economic freedom by allowing more exports from the U.S. to Cuba for products related to education, agricultural production, mass transit, and disaster preparedness.

"While the new regulations are a positive step, they may not be permanent. American and Cuban businesses need the security of knowing that the new Cuba policy is stable and secure in law. Congress should immediately lift the embargo on Cuba so that the U.S. can participate constructively in a peaceful transition to democracy and a market-oriented economy on the island."

DeLauro is a founding member of the bipartisan Cuba Working Group, which convenes meetings with leading experts on Cuba and foreign affairs, hosts policy roundtables and discussions, and seeks to draw attention to how reforms in the U.S. and Cuba are opening new opportunities for commercial, diplomatic, and people-to-people relationships.
