DeLauro Statement on Council for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships

February 5, 2009

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn. -3) issued the following statement on the Council for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships announced by President Barack Obama.

"I welcome the launch of President Obama's Council for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. Faith-based programs offer a unique opportunity to utilize the power of our churches and religious organizations to help the most vulnerable among us, particularly in these most difficult of economic times. I saw growing up at my parent's kitchen table how the church could serve as a nexus between family and community – solving problems of the people in our neighborhood.

"It is equally gratifying that in announcing the Council, President Obama also demonstrated an understanding of how in partnering with these groups and organizations, we also need to respect the Constitution and non-discrimination laws. This is a welcome step in President Obama's effort to change the tone in Washington and find the common ground so we can restore the promise of this country as one of hope and opportunity."
