DeLauro Statement on Department of Labor’s Proposed Tip Rule

October 7, 2019

WASHINGTON, DC (October 7, 2019) Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement after the Department of Labor released a proposed rule rolling back protections on tipped workers.

"In March of 2018, I was proud to work on a bipartisan, bicameral basis to ensure that tipped workers' wages did not get taken by their employers. The progress we made on that issue is now being used by the Department of Labor to undercut those same workers. By rolling back the 80/20 rule—an Obama administration guideline that ensured tipped workers spent at least 80% of their time on tipped work—the DOL is giving predatory employers a green-light to rip off workers. Secretary Scalia should immediately rescind this misguided rule and protect workers. His new position as the head of a department created to protect workers demands nothing less."
