DeLauro Statement on DeVos’s School Safety Commission
WASHINGTON, DC (June 6, 2018) — Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos's comment that the Federal Commission on School Safety will not investigate the role guns play in school safety.
"Our children's safety at school deserves urgent attention. That is why Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos's recent statement during her Senate testimony, suggesting that the federal commission on school safety that she chairs will not seriously consider the role that guns play in school violence, is so disturbing. According to analysis by the Washington Post, nearly 13,000 students have been affected by school shootings, with eleven school shootings already this year—among the worst on record. How can we discuss school safety without talking about guns? That is absurd."
"The Department of Education has a key role to play in examining, developing, and promoting reforms to make our schools safer, and it is shameful that Betsy DeVos has chosen to abdicate her part of that role. Our kids need Secretary DeVos to be an advocate them, not for the NRA."
