DeLauro Statement on EPA’s Dredging Decision for Eastern Long Island Sound

November 4, 2016

NEW HAVEN, CT (November 4, 2016) CongresswomanRosa DeLauro (CT-03) today applauded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for issuing a final rule designating a dredged material site in Eastern Long Island Sound. Under the EPA’s final rule, the site will receive dredged sediment from ports and harbors in Connecticut and New York that has passed stringent testing requirements.

“I applaud today’s announcement by the EPA to designate the Eastern Long Island Sound as a site for disposal of dredged material. This decision today will ensure that Connecticut’s ports and harbors will remain accessible, while protecting the ecological treasure that is the Long Island Sound,” said DeLauro. “This designation has been several years in the making, and has been forged among stakeholders at the federal, state, and local levels. I will continue to work with the EPA, and with my colleagues in the Connecticut Delegation, to safeguard this designation and the Long Island Sound region.”

Earlier this year, DeLauro joined her colleagues in the Connecticut and Rhode Island Delegations in expressing support for the EPA’s proposed rule to designate the Eastern Long Island Sound Dredged Material Disposal Site.
