Today, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) released the following statement on the fifth anniversary of the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol:

“It has been five years since President Donald Trump led an insurrection at the United States Capitol – one that traumatized and injured Capitol police officers and staff, and led to the deaths of five officers, tasked with defending our democracy at great personal risk to themselves.

“Today, most of those who attacked the Capitol to stop Congress from certifying the 2020 presidential election are free because of a blanket pardon issued by President Trump. Since then, many have been charged with new violent crimes including plotting to murder FBI agents in retaliation for investigating the case.

“President Trump has sent a clear message to those who attacked the Capitol on his behalf that day: I have your back. But our democracy is stronger than one man and his mob. Congress returned that night and finished its duty to certify the election of President Joe Biden.

“January 6 is a reminder of how easily our democracy can be threatened, but in this time of democratic uncertainty, let it also be a testament to its resilience.”
