DeLauro Statement on Food and Drug Administration Action on Infant Formula Shortage

May 17, 2022

House Appropriations Committee Chair Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) released a statement on the announcement(link is external) from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on actions they plan to take to secure the domestic supply of infant formula:

"While I welcome action from the FDA to address the infant formula shortage, I continue to echo my concerns about safety. As I have said before, we cannot make a false choice between safety and supply. I am disappointed that these actions do not do enough to ensure the formula FDA imports is safe for consumers. Instead of purchasing formula from FDA-regulated facilities, the administration is opening the door to any company that self-identifies its formula as ‘safe'. That is unacceptable. Several babies have been hospitalized and at least two have died. We cannot put another child at risk.

"Let me be clear – the food we give our babies should be the safest product on the market. This week, I will introduce legislation to restore the domestic supply of infant formula. Moreover, I will prepare legislation to strengthen food safety to help prevent this from happening again. Families are depending on us to help them get formula that is safe for their babies."
