DeLauro Statement on the House Republican Budget
WASHINGTON, DC (March 15, 2016) — Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding the House Republicans' budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2017.
"Speaker Ryan and House Republicans are once again working against America's working families with a FY 2017 budget crafted for special interests, at the expense of America's most vulnerable. From block-granting SNAP and Medicaid, to repealing the Affordable Care Act and turning Medicare into a voucher program, the House Republican budget imposes a number of damning policies on America's most effective social safety net programs. The budget also proposes devastating cuts to crucial non-defense programs.
"How can Speaker Ryan claim to want to end poverty, only to then propose a budget that decimates the very programs that help millions of America's poor? The Republicans' rhetoric on poverty is hollow and their actions do not match their words. We need a budget that will work for all Americans, not just the wealthy few."
Last week, DeLauro led 129 House Democrats in calling on House leadership to protect SNAP and reject proposals to block-grant the program. She also recently called on Speaker Ryan and House Republicans to develop serious policy proposals to end poverty.
