DeLauro Statement on Labor Day
NEW HAVEN, CT—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) released the following statement today in recognition of Labor Day, which will be celebrated this Monday, September 7:
“The right to organize was won in factories, government offices and universities like the ones across Connecticut. Labor Day is a yearly national tribute to workers who fought for the right to organize, built this country and shared in its wealth. They asked only to be treated fairly and be paid an honest wage for an honest day’s work. Like all Americans, they dreamed of buying a home, raising a family and educating their children while enjoying a middle class life.
“We celebrate Labor Day to honor American workers for their achievements, but today that dream is under attack. American workers are the greatest in the world. But too often over the past 20 years hardworking Americans have been faced with unfair trade agreements that have led to depressed wages and job losses here at home. Good paying American jobs have been shipped to countries that allow workers to be treated abhorrently, allow human trafficking to thrive, and play games manipulating their currency to keep the costs of their products artificially low. On this Labor Day, I continue my commitment to fighting future trade agreements that treat American workers unfairly, resulting in lost jobs and depressed wages.”
