DeLauro Statement on Labor Day
NEW HAVEN, CT (September 1, 2017) — Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement marking Labor Day, which will be celebrated this Monday, September 4.
“Labor Day is an annual tribute to workers who fought for the right to organize across our nation, helping people share in the wealth created building this nation. Their tireless efforts have allowed countless Americans to earn an honest wage for an honest day’s work under safe labor conditions. That rising standard of living afforded them the opportunity to participate in the American dream: to buy a home, raise a family, and get their children a great education so they will be better off than previous generations.
“Yet, the American dream remains under attack. American workers are the greatest in the world on a level-playing field—but unfair trade agreements have tilted the game in favor of outsourcing, which has depressed wages and led to job losses here at home. Many countries keep the costs of their products artificially low through currency manipulation and the absence of protections for workers, at the expense of their workers and ours.
“On this Labor Day, and every day of the year, I remain committed to fighting for good-paying American jobs for American workers, fair labor treatment, and modifications to trade agreements that are not in our nation’s interest.”
