DeLauro Statement on the Murder of George Floyd

May 29, 2020
Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC —  (May 29, 2020) Today, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) released the following statement in response to former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin killing Minneapolis resident George Floyd, as well as the subsequent civil unrest.

"The murder of George Floyd was unspeakably tragic. The country has rightfully condemned the officer for kneeling on Mr. Floyd’s neck and back—actions that fly in the face of use of force training and practices police officers are taught. In the aftermath of this tragedy, people in Minneapolis and across the country are angry. We cannot allow trust between law enforcement and our communities to fray beyond repair. Yet, statements like those from President Trump last night—which glorify violence—are divisive. Now more than ever, our elected leaders must strive to heal divisions and ensure that justice is served. Finally, the accused officer has been charged with murder.”

DeLauro is a cosponsor of Congressman Steve Cohen’s (TN-09) bill, the Police Training and Independent Review Act of 2019, which authorizes the Department of Justice to award grants to states that require law enforcement officers are trained on diversity and sensitivity, and require an independent prosecutor to be appointed to investigate and prosecute an alleged offense involving the use of deadly force by a law enforcement officer that results in a death or injury.
