DeLauro Statement on Philips’s Manufacturing Facility Closing in Wallingford, Outsourcing Jobs

May 31, 2018

NEW HAVEN, CT (May 31, 2018) Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement in response to Philip's announcement that they will be closing their manufacturing facility in Wallingford and outsourcing potentially hundreds of jobs to Mexico and Costa Rica.

"Philips's decision to outsource manufacturing jobs from Connecticut is shocking, and reinforces what I have been saying for months: this tax scam for the rich has created even greater incentives for companies to continue shipping our jobs overseas. Big multinational corporations and Wall Street are reaping the benefits of huge tax cuts from President Trump and Paul Ryan—all the while Americans are losing their jobs. That is exactly why I introduced the Close Tax Loopholes That Outsource American Jobs Act earlier this year—to level the playing field for working families by making corporations pay U.S. taxes at the same rate as companies that keep their facilities and jobs right here in America."

"This news also highlights the need for a renegotiated NAFTA that no longer carries incentives to outsource American jobs. Too many families have suffered at the expense of corporations that profit from outsourcing more and more jobs. A new NAFTA that raises wages and increases labor standards in Mexico through swift and certain enforcement would go a long way toward stopping the endless outsourcing. President Trump has repeatedly promised he would protect American workers, and he must keep his promise with action."

"My office will be fully engaged with any constituents who are impacted by Philips's decision. Families in Wallingford and across Connecticut deserve better than losing their jobs in a global race to the bottom. We cannot let them become just another statistic."
