DeLauro Statement on the President’s Supreme Court Nominee
WASHINGTON, DC (March 16, 2016) — Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding the President nominating Merrick Garland for the Supreme Court.
“Now that President Obama has named Merrick Garland as his nominee for the Supreme Court, the Senate must do its job, hold hearings, and give him an up or down vote. When the American people voted and reelected President Obama in 2012, they gave him the right to nominate a candidate to the Supreme Court until he leaves office. The Constitution makes this process very clear.
“Judge Garland has outstanding legal credentials and is an excellent pick for the nation’s highest court. I strongly urge my colleagues in the Senate to move forward with the confirmation process and quickly fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court. There are far too many important cases before the Court to delay this matter until 2017.”
