DeLauro Statement on President Trump’s Announcement of Tariffs on Mexico
WASHINGTON, DC (May 31, 2019) — Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement following President Trump’s announcement to impose tariffs on Mexico.
“President Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on Mexico has shown that he is willing to prioritize his misguided immigration policies over the jobs and well-being of American workers. If the President follows through with his threat to impose tariffs on Mexico, his administration jeopardizes blowing up over a year of work with Congress to renegotiate NAFTA. By announcing that he would arbitrarily slap trade sanctions on Mexico over immigration issues, President Trump has potentially derailed progress on a new NAFTA deal that could stop the ongoing outsourcing of American jobs.
Democrats have been working on improving the re-negotiated NAFTA to remove the Big Pharma giveaways that lock in high drug prices and strengthen labor and environmental standards and enforcement to end job outsourcing. This work will be derailed, and NAFTA’s damage will continue. I urge President Trump to withdraw his decision to impose these tariffs and work with Congress to improve the re-negotiated NAFTA.”
