DeLauro Statement on President Trump’s Notification to Congress on NAFTA
NEW HAVEN, CT – Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding President Trump's notification to Congress regarding the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
"For decades, NAFTA has driven down workers' wages and shipped good-paying jobs overseas. That needs to change, and Canada must be a party to the final deal. A deal between the United States and Mexico is not good enough. Democrats have said clearly, from the outset of this renegotiation, that the only way a NAFTA replacement is going to benefit working people is if a final deal between all three nations removes the current outsourcing incentives, raises wages for American workers, and adds strong labor standards with a swift and certain enforcement mechanism in order to protect jobs here at home. I appreciate United States Trade Representative Lighthizer's good faith negotiations with stakeholders, I hope that they continue, and I look forward to reviewing the final text of any agreement to find out whether it meets these criteria and will improve the lives of working people across North America."
