DeLauro Statement on Senate Action on Child Tax Credit
Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro released the following statement in response to Senate action on the Wyden-Smith tax bill, legislation that includes a small increase in the Child Tax Credit:
“It is encouraging that a version of the Child Tax Credit has received bipartisan support in the Senate. While I appreciate Senator Wyden’s work, I believe we must not stop short of bringing back the expanded, monthly Child Tax Credit. We must reinstate the full credit secured in the American Rescue Plan Act, modeled after my American Family Act, the only proven pathway to economic security and ending child poverty.
“The expanded CTC delivered monthly checks for families, cut child poverty in half, and helped vulnerable and working-class families to pay their bills, put food on the table, buy school supplies, or pay for a dance or piano lesson. We prioritized working- and middle-class families, not billionaires and the biggest corporations. And we provided a strong stimulus for American families and businesses, as every $1 spent on the Child Tax Credit generated $8 in economic benefits. Simply put: it worked, and we must make it law once more.
“We provided the largest middle class tax cut in a generation in 2021. We must make the expanded, monthly Child Tax Credit permanent in 2025.”
