DeLauro Statement on Senate Passage of Budget Resolution
House Appropriations Committee Chair Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-03) issued the following statement after the United States Senate voted to pass a $3.5 trillion budget resolution:
"This morning, the United States Senate voted to pass a historic budget resolution that will help to advance Democratic priorities and continue to Build Back Better by making critical investments to expand our nation's social safety net. This resolution advances President Biden and Congressional Democrats' bold agenda to better the lives of hard-working middle-class families, small business owners, and the vulnerable. We must also ask the biggest corporations and top one percent to pay their fair share in taxes.
"The breadth of the initiatives covered in this resolution is transformational. The resolution expands the Child Tax Credit, establishes universal pre-K for three and four-year-olds, creates a new child care benefit for working families, makes higher education more accessible with two years of tuition-free community college, increases the maximum Pell Grant award, and launches a first-of-its-kind paid family and medical leave benefit. Taken together, these efforts will provide every family and child across the country with a better chance at a better life.
"As a champion of paid family and medical leave and the Child Tax Credit, I am pleased the Senate framework includes these priorities to lift generations of children out of poverty and help working and middle-class families who are more hard-pressed than ever. But we must go further. Now is the moment to make the Child Tax Credit permanent and advance critical funding for child care and paid family and medical leave. Working with our colleagues in the Senate, House Democrats are ready to produce a reconciliation bill committed to our values that will make a difference in the lives of all Americans."
