DeLauro Statement on the Singapore Summit
WASHINGTON, DC (June 12, 2018) — Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding President Trump’s summit with Kim Jong Un of North Korea.
“It is unclear what President Trump and Kim Jong Un of North Korea actually discussed yesterday, given that there were no staff recording notes for key conversations at the summit. That lack of clarity is compounded by the lack of specifics in the joint statement that each party signed. We do not know what timeline the President committed to with regard to North Korea’s denuclearization. Did he discuss North Korea’s appalling human rights abuses? What else did the President give away? The devil is in the details.”
“Effective diplomacy also requires collaboration with our most important allies. That is why I remain disappointed with President Trump’s behavior at the G-7 ahead of yesterday’s summit. Insulting our allies diminishes our leadership in the world. Diplomacy remains the only route to resolve the tension between the United States and North Korea, given the inherent risks of using military force. Congress must be involved as the Administration proceeds, and I will be closely monitoring their progress as they negotiate the contours of any agreement.”
