DeLauro Statement on the Tenth Anniversary of Sandy Hook
Today, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) released the following statement on the tenth anniversary of the Sandy Hook mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut:
“Today, we honor the families, the survivors, and the lives of the beautiful souls we lost ten years ago in Newtown.
“We lost 26 students and teachers in an unspeakable tragedy on that cold December day. These were babies. Newtown parents continue to bear the weight of losing out on precious moments with their children that they will never get back. And while we mark another year without the sons and daughters we lost, we know that their spirits live on through the resilience of Newtown.
“As we mark the tenth anniversary of this tragedy that forever changed our community, our state, and our country, we must honor the memory of those children we lost and families torn apart by taking action. No one should ever have to experience the devastating loss of a child or a family member to preventable gun violence.
“It is the responsibility of Congress to protect Americans – we must enact more commonsense gun violence prevention laws and save lives. Inaction is unacceptable.
“Each and every day, countless American communities are subjected to this carnage. We have seen 623 mass shootings this year, which have tragically resulted in 653 deaths. As a nation, we cannot afford to become desensitized to gun violence. We cannot afford to lose another life.
“We have a moral obligation to honor all those killed with action – so together, let’s push forward to enact gun violence prevention laws. We will never give up or take no for an answer. We must save lives.”
