DeLauro Statement on Trans-Pacific Partnership Negotiations
WASHINGTON, DC—Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) released the following statement today on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiating round that recently concluded in Maui. DeLauro is a longtime opponent of trade deals that cost American jobs and undermine critical worker, environmental, financial and food safety protections.
"This setback to the TPP in Maui shifts the momentum in the national debate. The impasse highlights very troubling issues for anyone concerned about the future of the American middle class.
“The most important hurdle now is the American pharmaceutical industry's demand for 12 years of exclusivity for life saving drugs. That ultimately means higher prices for hard pressed American consumers.
“Even though this delay may push the debate until next year, the potential agreement would still have the effect of depressing wages and threatening food safety."
