DeLauro Statement on Trump Administration Steel and Aluminum Tariffs

March 1, 2018

WASHINGTON, DC (March 1, 2018) Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today released the following statement regarding President Trump's announced actions on steel and aluminum imports.

"For too long, American workers have been crushed by the illegal dumping of Chinese steel into our markets. Despite losing millions of good paying jobs over the years, our federal government had done nothing to act. That inaction also put our national security at risk. That is why I—along with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle—continually pressed the Administration to enforce the rules for fair trade and to live up to its promises to working people. Hundreds of thousands of workers and communities, as well as critical infrastructure and defense supply chains in America, depend upon the steel industry. They deserve real enforcement of our laws to hold bad actors accountable, and the Administration is correct in taking the actions outlined today."

DeLauro sent a letter to the President last September urging the administration to take immediate action under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act to remedy distortions in the steel market caused by illegal steel dumping that undermines our national security infrastructure. She also signed a letter last October urging the Administration to release a report on this issue as quickly as possible.
